Projects
Group related chats with shared instructions and files so you don’t repeat the same context.
When to use a project
Use a project when several chats need the same instructions and documents, such as work for one client, a course, a paper, or a policy area. A one-off question can stay a regular chat. A project’s chats appear under the project in the sidebar.
Create a project
- In the Chat sidebar, click Projects, then click New project.
- Enter a name, and choose a color and an icon. A new chat opens in the project.
To start another chat in the project, click the plus button on the project’s row. Click the project name to open its page, which shows the description, instructions, files, and chats.
Edit changes the name, description, color, icon, and instructions. The same settings are in Settings → Projects. Instructions are sent with every message in the project, so use them for things that don’t change: who the audience is, which terms to use, and what to leave out.
Add files to a project
You can’t attach files in the composer yet. To give a project’s chats access to a document:
- Upload the document in Files.
- In the file inspector, select the project.
- Wait until the file shows Ready for chat. Until then, indexing may still be in progress.
- Ask in a chat in the project. The assistant can search the project’s files by name or by their contents.
To work with images and video, choose a model that supports them. Text-only models can’t describe images.
Move, archive, or delete
Each chat belongs to one project. Use the chat’s menu to move it to another project, remove it from the project, rename it, pin it, archive it, or delete it.
Archiving a project hides it from the sidebar and keeps its chats in it. Deleting a project deletes the project and keeps its chats as regular chats. Chat asks you to confirm both.
Project memory
To let Chat save facts from a project’s chats to that project only, turn on Dynamic memory for the project in Settings → Projects. Whether Chat uses saved memory at all depends on your account memory settings. See Memory. Chats in a project that isn’t archived appear in Search.
