Create a chart#

To get a chart, ask for one. Describe what you want compared, or which series you want over time. The reply includes a chart card with the plot, a note that says whether the data is live, and a toolbar. The composer doesn’t have a chart button.

Charts appear in Chat on the web, in the desktop app, and on iPhone, in an Agent’s home conversation, and in Code tasks. In an Agent’s home conversation, the chart appears inside the message. In Code, the chart stays in the transcript after the turn finishes instead of collapsing into the “Worked for…” summary.

If a chart has missing or invalid data, the rest of the conversation still loads.

Compare items#

Ask to compare models, companies, countries, or any other set of named items. You get a scatter plot of named points, not a line chart that treats the names as dates.

Each point can have a name, a color for its group (such as a lab, a sector, or a region), and a size for a third value. Click a group in the legend to hide or show it. Colors don’t change when you hide a group.

A comparison can also show a dashed line through the points that no other point beats on both axes, and shade the region you asked about. The line shows the trade-off, not a trend. A cost axis can use a log scale so that low-cost and high-cost options are both readable. When there’s room, names appear next to the points.

Include the unit in your question. Cost per task and list price per token produce different charts. If only the list price is available, the axis and the footnote say so.

Chart a time series#

For unemployment, prices, revenue, or other dated data, you get a time chart. When the data skill is on, live data is fetched from the publisher. The footer shows Live data, Partly live, or Model-supplied values, names the sources, and can show an as of time.

You can ask for a derived series by itself, such as free cash flow, a margin, or an inflation-adjusted series. Its inputs don’t have to be plotted. They’re still cited, and Refresh data updates them. You don’t need to calculate the series yourself.

When the matching skill is on, you can chart data from sources including Yahoo Finance, Stooq, FRED, BLS, SEC, and World Bank. Alpha Vantage doesn’t automatically extend to its full paid history. Census, CFTC, and FDIC data is more often shown as tables and cross-sections than as long series. You don’t need a series code: ask for the unemployment rate or Apple’s revenue, and the assistant finds the official ID. Finance and Government list which plugin to install.

If more history is available than the chart first shows, the card shows range buttons such as 1Y and All, plus As drawn for the original range. Click the dates to enter a start or end date: a year, a month, a quarter, or a specific day. Customize opens an overview strip. Drag the window to move it, drag an edge to resize it, or click the strip to jump to a point.

Customize a chart#

Customize is the slider button in the toolbar. If a chart can’t be changed without misrepresenting the data, the button is hidden.

Options can include:

• Type — Line, Area, Bar, Pie, Donut, or Scatter
• Series — Side by side, Stacked, or 100%
• Scale — Linear or Log on the value axis, available only when every visible value is positive
• Compare — values as charted, each series indexed to 100, percent change, or change from a year earlier
• Labels — values on the marks

Categories that aren’t dates stay as bars, so a list of companies can’t become a line chart. Pie and donut are available when a single series has a readable number of slices. When indexed or year-over-year values are on, a note under the chart says you aren’t seeing the raw values.

The model can lock a chart so that Compare, log scale, or Customize isn’t available. You can ask for a ranking to stay as bars. A one-line footnote under the chart states any caveat, such as the method, or “illustrative” when the numbers aren’t measurements.

Save or export a chart#

Show as table switches the card to a table of the latest 400 rows. To get every row, save the CSV. Show chart switches back. A collapsed card shows a Show chart button with the title and source.

Save or copy offers Image (PNG), Copy image, Vector (SVG), and Data (CSV). On iPhone, saving opens the share sheet. In the desktop app, a save dialog opens. In a browser, the file downloads. After you copy, the card shows Image copied, or tells you that copying isn’t available. If saving fails, the card tells you. Refresh data is available for live sources. If a refresh fails, the card tells you and keeps the chart you had.

Ask about a data point#

On a pie chart, or a bar chart of categories, click a slice or a bar to ask about that data point. You can also use the arrow keys and Enter. This isn’t available on time series. Dragging across a time series zooms in.

To install a data source, see Skills and plugins. Without one, a chart can use only values the model provides, and the footer says so.
